Guided Tours for Groups at the Iron Hammer Museum

Exhibition at the Iron Hammer Museum

Not far away from the city district of Eckersmühlen, there is the Historic Iron Hammer, which was owned by the Schäff family for more than five generations. This gem of industrial history was still in full production up to 1974. Today it is a “living museum”, where the guests will encounter the spectacular art of iron hammering at first hand.

A fine choice of products manufactured will also be on display there. In former times, a vast variety of tools for woodworking and agriculture were produced at the Iron Hammer. Dour rooms have been refurbished at the mansion, in which the furniture from the Schäff flat and various exhibits from the enthusiastic local historian’s archives are on display.

In the annex, there has been a permanent exhibition „From Ore to Iron“ since July 2006. It focuses on the raw material iron used in the old forge and, inter alia, demonstrates the nature of the ore, ore deposits in the Franconian Jura, as well as the ore production itself. In addition to various tools, the sectional model of a coal mine and a Renn furnace, a replicated mine shaft is on display.

Changing special exhibitions will complete this museum homestead. In the year 2011, the Iron Hammer celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Leon Industry Factory Museum

Factory Museum

The Factory Museum of Roth focuses on the leon industry, which determined the city’s industrialization and influenced its development  in the 19th century. The method of using silver or gold-plated threads for the production of fine webs and textiles originally came from Lyon/France, the centre of the art of weaving.

The hugenot George Fournier was the one to introduce it in Roth and the gold and silver braid manufacturer Johann Philipp Stieber was the one to expand it on a large scale. In the factory museum, a spectacular tour will show you the way the wire takes to become leon ware on running machines. Here, the individual stations are the fine wire drawing, the ironing, the big variety of its further processing on wire covering machines and looms, as well as its packaging.

In 2003, the factory museum was awarded the Bavarian Museum Prize by Versicherungskammer Bayern (insurance group).
